Three charged with underaged beer sales in Newport The Newport Police Department, working in partnership with The Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission, this week conducted an undercover investigation into the sale of alcoholic beverages to those under the age of 21 . Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults said a total of 25 businesses were checked, and three purchases were made by the 19 year-old cooperating witness. The other businesses either refused the sale after verifying the age of the witness or by realizing that he was too young to purchase alcohol and turning him away. The witness was able to purchase an alcoholic beverage at Ruby Tuesday, Fox and Hounds and La Carreta Mexican Restaurant. At each of the three locations the witness was served beer. The server at each of the locations was charged with the sale of an alcoholic beverage to a minor under the age of 21. The three businesses were also written citations by Agents of the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission because they also hold a State License allowing the sale of liquor by the drink. The citations require the license holder to pay a fine to the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission. “While we are disappointed that three purchases were made during this operation, we are well pleased that businesses inside the City of Newport are being diligent to check the identifications of potential consumers and help us to prevent the sale of alcoholic beverages to under age consumers,” the Chief said. “We will continue to conduct these types of investigations and make a concerted effort to stop the sale of alcoholic beverages to under age consumers.” The Newport residents who face charges are; Jennifer Nicole Smith, 32, Pikeview Avenue; Nicole Lynn Stephens, 45, Omega Road, and Samuel Pinon-Barrientos, 40, Old Sevierville Highway. They are scheduled to appear in Cocke County General Sessions Court on October 26, to answer to the charges.
