Whitewater rafting another record breaker in 2016
Whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River in Cocke County again broke records this summer. County Clerk Jan Brockwell who handles permitting and revenue from the sport, said there were some drought issues because of the hot weather however she thanked officials with Duke Energy, which operates the Waterville Power Plant, “for once again keeping everything on schedule.“ Water from the plant produces the whitewater which makes for the enjoyable sport. The county clerk said Kevin Benton, Cocke County EMA Director spent endless hours along with the River Officers, to keep the river safe. With a total of 202,178 customers, and more than 70 days of temperatures in the 90's, Brockwell says the river officers handled the stress well. A total of $412,529 in direct revenue came into Cocke County from whitewater fees and permits this year. Whitewater rafting has grown dramatically since 1995 when just 17,337 paid the $2.00 county fee to travel down the river. During the past 11 years, a total of more than 2.9 million individuals traveled the 6.5 mile whitewater trip, which includes 12 Class III and 3 Class IV rapids. Revenue to the county totals more than $4.9 million since 1995.
