Larson charged in pill mill indictment
A federal grand jury in Knoxville has returned a 13-count indictment naming a Jefferson County man and five other medical professionals in a major drug conspiracy. Richard Larson, 80, of Dandridge, is charged in a conspiracy to distribute and dispense oxycodone, oxymorphone, and morphine outside the scope of professional practice and not for a legitimate medical purpose, maintenance of a drug-involved premises, distribution of oxycodone resulting in death, and money laundering. One of the defendants is a physician who's license was revoked several years ago. The indictment alleges the defendants distributed 12 million prescrition painkillers to generate clinic revenue of at least $17.5 million out of a network of primary care and pain management clinics in Lenoir City and Knoxville. Three of the clinics were raided in March, 2015. If convicted, those charged in the indictment could be imprisoned for a term of 20 years to life and ordered to pay fines up to $1 million.
