Trump candidacy and Tennessee Republicans
Although most political insiders and polls in Tennessee predict Donald Trump to easily carry the state in November, with less than a month until the general election, members in the Tennessee Republican Party, are in a bit of turmoil over the controversial man at the top of the ticket. The division within the party has reignited in recent days and comes after the release of a 2005 video containing vulgar comments Trump made about groping women. Over the weekend, Gov. Bill Haslam — who has frequently been critical of the Republican nominee — issued a statement in which he said he would write in a Republican, maybe Mike Pence, unless Trump withdrew his candidacy. State law requires all candidates for president, including write-ins, to register at least 50 days before the election, and eight virtual unknowns already have. Shortly after Haslam’s statement, state party officials began telling Tennessee Republicans to vote their conscience. But some Republicans do not support thatn approach.y argue Republicans should vote for the Republican candidate...no matter. On Thursday, Sen. Mae Beavers, a Republican, said if someone is a Republican, they need to support the party’s nominee. Beavers, who was a Trump delegate and was head of the party’s delegation to the Republican National Convention, said of Haslam's position, , “I think it’s a disservice to the party, to our candidate and to the people.” She said Haslam should reconsider his position and think about the future of the country. Haslam says he is doing just that. “I have concerns about the future of our party. We struggle already with women, with minorities and with young people, and we’re on a track where we’re not helping that,” said the governor.
