Williams in custody after pursuit
A Cocke County man is in custody following the Monday pursuit of an auto stolen from a Newport attorney. Newport Captain Amy Gentry said she spotted Christopher Williams, 21, Sweetwater Road, Newport, operating the 2010 Cadillac owned by attorney Derrick Whitson, which had been reported stolen from the Moore Street home of Whitson, just a short time earlier. Officer Gentry said she attempted a traffic stop on the Cosby Road at which time Williams turned on his turn signal, and swerved into the path of the patrol car, entering Interstate 40 at a high rate of speed. Williams would later say he was traveling at 160 miles per hour during the pursuit. Williams evaded officers and later crashed into two cars before abandoning the Cadillac and running into a wooded area.He eventually was arrested by Deputy Timothy Snapp. Inside the auto, police found a bag containing Gabapentine and drug paraphernalia. He also was in possession of burglary tools. Bond is set at $75,000 on charges of fleeing to evade, reckless endangerment, five counts reckless driving, driving unlicensed, possession of drug paraphernalia, a legend drug and burglary tools, aggravated burglary, theft over $10,000, improper passing, duty to render aid after a crash and leaving the scene of an accident. Williams on Tuesday was charged also with the theft of two bicycles from the River Ridge area earlier this week as well as items valued at $160 from a Yukon owned by Robert Lewis of Fourth Street in Newport.
