Smith/King robbery
Two Cocke County residents say they were robbed at gunpoint on Friday, after asking an acquaintance for a ride to Cosby. Dustin Smith, Grandview Way, Cosby and Helen King, Twilight Lane, Newport, told Deputy Chris Barnes they saw a male acquaintance in Eastport, and asked him to take them to Dark Hollow Road. They agreed to pay for gas for the trip. The victims say the suspect who appeared to be under the influence, was taking them when pulled onto Pleasant Grove Road. There he allegedly pulled a handgun on Smith. The victim was hit over the head with the firearm and after he fell to the ground, Smith was kicked on the head and abdomen. Then the firearm was allegedly pointed at King who was ordered to surrender her purse. "Give me the purse or I'll kill you," King was told. After the victims called 911, officers were sent to the scene. First Call EMS took both victims to the Newport Medical Center for treatment. Deputy Barnes was told that $200 in cash plus Opana and suboxone were taken from King.
