Hunting dogs recovered
A Jefferson County man has been charged in the theft of two Plott hunting dogs valued at $20,000. Billy Spurgeon, Sprouse Hollow Road, Sevierville, told Newport Patrol Officer Jessy Burgess that he turned his dogs loose on English Mountain at 1:30 p.m.Saturday, but they didn't return. Later that day, Spurgeon found the dog's GPS collars in the trash can at the entrance to the Walmart store in Newport. A review of the video surveillance at the store did not show anyone putting the collars into the trash can. On Sunday, a resident of Hensley Hollow Road in the Chestnut Hill community contacted authorities because a hunting dog kept hanging around her home. Jefferson County Sheriff GW "Bud" McCoig says he responded to the area, and learned that the dog in question belonged to a man who had been hunting with Spurgeon on Saturday. Further investigation led McCoig to an old school bus parked on a nearby property. Spugeon's dogs were found penned up inside the bus. The property owner, Andrew Danokaras, 24, was taken into custody on a charge of theft over $10,000. The sheriff said Danokaras had taken the collars off the dogs and had thrown them into the waste basket at Walmart.
