Wildfire update Today property owners, business owners, renters, and lease holders in Sevier County will be allowed to return to full-time occupancy through the East Parkway (Hwy. 321) entry point. The City of Gatlinburg plans to reopen for business and to the general public on Friday at 7:00 a.m. Major roadways are expected to be open, but some city roadways may remain closed to accommodate utility work. More information will be provided throughout the week. There are 14 confirmed fatalities, and 13 of the victims have been identified , there have been 160 injuries/illnesses and 1,785 structures have been damaged or destroyed by the fire. Both the Chimey Tops and Cobbly Nob fires now are more than 50 percent contained, thanks to the recent rains. The Sevier County Economic Development Council, in conjunction with Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, have announced the creation of www.mountaintough.org. The website was named for a statement made by Mike Werner, Mayor of Gatlinburg who said, “We are Mountain Tough, and we have a strong, strong faith in God.” The website will serve as a one-stop-shop for information related to the recent wildfires in Sevier County. County officials have also collaborated with United Way of Greater Knoxville to announce the transition of all Sevier County wildfire recovery-related calls to East Tennessee 2-1-1. Local residents can dial 2-1-1 toll free, and concerned citizens outside of the 865 area can dial 865-215-4211 to volunteer or make a donation. The call center will operate Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. U.S.Sen. Alexander (R-Tenn.) spoke on the Senate floor Tuesday afternoon about the Sevier County fires and his visit to East Tennessee last week. Said Alexander, "Your character is measured not so much by how you handle things when things are going well, but how you handle adversity, and if that’s the measure of character, the character of the people of Gatlinburg and Sevier County is through the roof because they’re not complaining. …I salute the people of Sevier County and Gatlinburg for their courage and character and their compassion for one another.”
