Randal Brown sentence
Randal Joe Brown, 41, Beech Street, Newport, has been sentenced to a 42 month federal sentence by Judge Ronnie Greer on a charge he was a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Newport police in May saw a vehicle leave a "known drug house" on Beech Street, and then observed that a tail light was out on the auto. So Patrol Officer Brandon Cassidy made a traffic stop, and charged Brown, 40, with no insurance, third offense driving on a revoked and a light law violation. Brown was taken into custody and his vehicle towed. A short time later the wrecker operator contacted police to say the auto contained "lots of guns and dope." A subsequent search revealed a jacket under the hood of the auto which contained a 9 millimeter handgun along with three-30 round magazines, and a .22 handgun. Inside the vehicle officers found methamphetamine, suboxone and marijuana. So Brown was charged additionally with possession of the controlled substances and two counts possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The subject later was indicted on the federal charge.
