Smelcer fire
A home, garage and vehicles were destroyed Monday in a freak fire in the Parrottsville community. Claude Smelcer, Sunlight Road, told Cocke County Deputy Logan Starritt that the blaze began just before 10 a.m. Jeremy Reed, Eagle Crest Way, Parrottsville, told Officer Starritt, he was working on a 2000 Mercury, changing the fuel pump when gasoline dropped from the pump onto a work light, in the Smelcer garage. The light caught on fire as Reed worked under the auto. Officers say the occupants of the garage and house were able to flee the burning structures. The Mercury and a 2000 Buick were destroyed along with the home and garage. Smelcer said his home and contents were valued at $232,000 and each of the autos were valued at $4,000 each. The fire also spread to the nearby home of Marie Ottinger, leaving an estimated $3,000 in damage to that residence.
