Five arrested in meth bust
A total of five persons were arrested Sunday afternoon, and an eight year-old boy was removed from the home, after Newport authorities responded to a Seabrook Street residence following reports of methamphetamine usage. Newport Captain Amy Gentry said officers were told that a resident, Lisa Webb, 35, was shooting up methamphetamine. Officers found drug paraphernalia including syringes and one containing a clear liquid. When she was drug tested by employees of the Department of Children's Services, Webb allegedly put toilet water into the drug screens. Now she faces charges of felony child endangerment and neglect, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence. Another resident of the home, Kenneth Rathbone, 55, was in possession of a 2002 GMC pickup which bore the tag registered to a 2003 Ford Taurus. The Taurus was reported stolen from Wilton Durfrene, Jr., Hill Road, Newport, on January 9. Investigators say the Taurus, valued at $2,500, was sold to a junkyard for $186. Three other individuals found at the home was jailed as well. Helen King, 34, described as homeless and Dustin Smith, Sr., 44, Fourth Street, Newport, are charged with theft over $1,000 in connection with the Taurus theft. Ernest King, 36, English Street, Newport was jailed on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal impersonation.
