Smith arrested after "shooting up" in hospital
Newport authorities have filed charges against a Newport woman who allegedly was found "shooting up" in her room at the Newport Medical Center over the weekend. Sgt. Matthew Elliott said Tanya Renea Smith, 54, was found to be in possession of a burned spoon and was melting a pill with a lighter. The officer said the woman "put other hospital patients and staff in danger when she used the lighter around oxygen in the room." Smith told investigators she had melted an Opana pill. Because of her medical issues, the defendant was cited into court on charges of reckless endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.
