Trio charged in attempted murder conspiracy
A total of three persons face charges following a Thursday incident in which a Whittier, North Carolina man allegedly attempted to kill a Cocke County man. Newport Patrol Officer Brandon Cassidy said Larry McCall III, 25, Whittier, visited Newport and argued with Justin Burnett at his Prospect Avenue, Newport home, regarding the purchase of a truck. During the altercation, McCall allegedly physically assaulted Burnette and then pulled a handgun on him. Officers were told Burnette knocked the weapon from McCall's hand. Officers say the victim sustained chest and facial injuries in the initial attack, but he declined medical treatment. Soon thereafter, McCalls mother, Lyvonne Rash, 46, Prospect Avenue, Newport and Alexandra Orr, 18 of Whittier, who is the girlfriend of McCall, allegedly conspired to dispose of the handgun. Orr allegedly wrapped the handgun in a diaper and disposed of it in a garbage can at a Newport convenience store, to prevent it from being discovered by law enforcement. She later revealed to authorities where she had dumped the weapon. McCall now is charged with attempted second degree murder, aggravated domestic assault, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Rash and Orr are charged with criminal conspiracy and obstruction of justice, and Orr is charged additionally with tampering with evidence.
