Tennessee responds to California Some Tennessee lawmakers have fired back at California after lawmakers in that state imposed a travel ban on the Volunteer State The California legislature passed a law banning state-sponsored travel to the Volunteer State after the General Assembly passed a law that allows counselors to refuse to counsel gay, lesbian and transgender clients. "I think what California has done is fire the first shot in what could be an economic civil war between the states," said Sen. Mike Bell . Bell has introduced a resolution that urges Gov. Bill Haslam to "ban state-sponsored and state-funded travel" to any state that has banned travel to Tennessee "in a selective way, so that the other states feel the pain and not Tennessee." Tennessee lawmakers said they tried to talk to the sponsor of the California bill, but their messages were not returned. The resolution suggests that such travel bans could lead to "economic warfare" and it warns other states against "imposing their unfounded moral judgment on their sister states as California has done in order to prevent escalating foolishness." The bill does not mention Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, which have enacted similar travel bans to Tennessee for passing the controversial counseling law. Rep. Bill Dunn, another Republican, pointed out that California public university sports teams would be barred from competing in Tennessee, such as the March Madness basketball tournament, under the travel ban.
