CLB approves joint fire and rescue building
The Cocke County Legislative Body meeting Tuesday evening, approved two recommendations from the county Finance Committee. They approved a joint venture, involving the Cosby Volunteer Fire Department and the Newport Rescue Squad, to construct a new building on South Highway 321 at Armory Road. And the body agreed to fund the venture at the same level as other volunteer fire locations around the county, currently $10,000 annually. There had been a question regarding the legality of the county contributing to the joint venture, however County Attorney Carter Moore said in his opinion there would be no issue with such funding. The Commission also agreed to ask Michael Brady Architects to evaluate the costs and feasibility of constructing a 30' X 30' addition to the current annex jail. The addition would contain an attorney/client meeting area, medical examination room and an isolation room. Plans are to fund the addition with an appropriation from the Litigation Fee account. Commissioner Clayton"Skip" Ellison pointed out there may be an issue with the needed space at the rear of the current jail. He questioned whether Litigation funds could be used to move an office currently in the annex to another nearby location, and thereby free up room in the building for the needed space. Such a move would mean an addition would not be needed. That question remains unanswered. Darrell Lindsey was appointed to the Cocke County Beer Board, representing the Seventh District. He will replace Nile Woodson who has resigned. And David Veridal introduced Meka Henderson who is the new Executive Director of Keep Cocke County Beautiful. Commissioner Jimmy Lindsey told the body that Henderson recently taught 40 environmental education classes in one week, in a local school.
