Lots of waste is diverted in Cocke County
The Cocke County Landfill Committee meeting Wednesday evening was told the county has met the state recycling goal. Mitch Loomis of the East Tennessee Development District (ETDD) told the committee that the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development requires all counties to recycle at least 25 percent of it's waste. Loomis said when all the recycling is considered, he expects that the recycling figure will be 30 to 32 percent. The community produced a total of 37,865 tons of waste last year, however more than 7,000 tons was recycled and did not go into the landfill. In addition, 1,120 tons of tree trimming waste from Newport Utilities right-of-way was recycled. Also 1,050 tons of sludge from the NU wastewater treatment plant, were dried and diverted from the landfill. Cocke County Mayor Crystal Ottinger reported that switches for compactors at the convenience centers, are to be moved into the on-site building in the near future.
