Voucher bill defeated
A school voucher bill that would have allowed parents to use taxpayer money to spend on private schools has failed to get enough votes to move forward in the Tennessee Senate. The measure, would have let students in failing school districts use the vouchers, and take funding from the low performing school. There weren’t enough votes in a Senate Education Committee to move the bill forward Wednesday. The legislation was opposed by educators and school boards who argued that low performing schools should be assisted to benefit all students instead of taking away funding. The General Assembly is also considering a measure that would create a five-year pilot program for vouchers in Shelby County only.
