I-40 crash on Friday
A tractor trailer crash Friday, on I-40 in Cocke County, sent one man to the hospital and blocked an entrance ramp for hours. Trooper John Woods said the incident occurred on westbound I-40 near the 432 exit, at 7:15 am. Michael Slater, 48, Eglin, S.C. was operating a 2001 Kenworth traveling west on I-40 when the driver lost steering on his truck. The vehicle went right and struck a guard rail, off the right shoulder, came back into the travel lane then right again striking the concrete bridge rail. The rig slid along the bridge rail, across the 432 west on-ramp, and struck a guard rail. At that point, the rig overturned on the guard rail. A 1997 Nissan, operated by Billy Grooms, 57, Newport was struck by debris from the initial impact with the guard rail. A passenger in the rig, Todd Slater, 28, also of South Carolina was taken by First Call EMS to Newport Medical Center for treatment. Trooper Sgt Jason Lowe examined the truck and determined that the steering rod had separated from the steering box. Slater was charged for having a false logbook.
