Brown charged in death of newborn
A Sevier County woman has been charged in the death of her newborn. The Sevier County Sheriff’s Department says Stephanie Brown, 24, delivered her daughter at her boyfriend’s home in Kodak on Jan. 14. Investigators allege that Brown admitted to placing her hand over the infant’s mouth and nose for several minutes. The newborn had trouble breathing. The action was to kill the infant, according to authorities. Brown took her daughter to LeConte Medical Center, where the infant was pronounced dead. The autopsy report indicates the infant was alive at birth, and did not die of natural causes. Investigators say Brown was questioned this week and then charged with First Degree Murder. She is being held on a $1 million bond.
