Rines pleads guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter
A man charged with Second Degree murder in the death of Eugene Ottinger in September of last year, Monday pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in Cocke County Circuit Court. Travis Rines, 29, Merry Way, Parrottsville and Ottinger, 48, South Highway 340, Parrottsville, argued after the son of Ottinger, reportedly pushed Rines off a chair. Rines said Ottinger threatened him, and the two men then became involved in a physical altercation on the Ottinger property, according to earlier testimony from Cocke County Detective Lt. C.J. Ball. The defendant said he continued to keep hitting Ottinger, and beating him "till he could make sure that the threat would be stopped," the detective told the court. The body of Ottinger was found later that evening on the lawn of the victim's property. In the plea agreement negotiated by Defense Attorney Jessica Sisk and Assistant DA Tonya Thornton, Rines was given a ten year sentence by Judge Ben Hooper. Rines will be required to serve 45 percent of the term before he is eligible for parole.
