Masoner fatality
A Cocke County man died Wednesday morning in a lawn mower accident on a property on Upward Road in the Parrottsville community. The victim was identified as Billy Hugh Masoner, 64, Carson Springs Road, Newport. The owner of the property, Janice Lewis told Cocke County Deputy Tony Bailey that she had hired Masoner to mow her lawn, but had left to take her dog for a ride. When she returned at 8 am, she found the Toro zero-turn mower upside down in a creek, and at that time she called 911. Officer Bailey said upon arrival, he found Masoner who was wearing a seatbelt, pinned under the water, underneath his mower. It appeared that the mower had slid off the embankment, falling approximately 10 feet into the water. A number of officers assisted Parrottsville Volunteer Fire Chief Kenny Trentham and First Call EMS personnel, in the use of a winch to pull the mower back up the bank.
