AHCA is being considered by the US Senate
The U.S. House of Representatives has approved the American Health Care Act (AHCA) .All of the Tennessee Republicans voted for the legislation, all of the Democrats voted against it. It now is being considered by the US Senate. The bill lowers the amount of individual tax credits that help low- to moderate-income people. If it becomes law, older consumers will end up paying more for their health insurance, but the cost varies by state. Tennessee AARP says a 55-year-old in the state, with an income of $25,000 could pay $6,300 to $10,000 more per year in annual premiums. It also would increase the amount insurers can charge older consumers, to five times what younger people pay. And states could waive that cap and let insurers charge even more. But the US Senate is looking to modify the House plan. Sen. Lamar Alexander, Republican of Tennessee, who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which oversees health care issues, says the Senate is looking to end the insurance mandate. He said there may be a phase out the so-called “individual mandate” — the requirement that Americans buy insurance, so that premiums don’t go up as fast. But opponents say that would increase premiums. There also may be a continuation of two years of the subsidies that seven million low-income Americans receive to help them afford insurance. The Senate is writing its own health care bill after the House’s 217-213 vote to approve legislation that would remove many of the Affordable Care Act's popular consumer protections, do away with the mandate for individuals to maintain health insurance and end expanded Medicaid eligibility.
