Organ donation
Gracelyn McMahan died earlier this month following two unsuccessful liver transplants, however her mother is taking the opportunity to tout the benefits or organ donation. The nine year-old, third grader at Newport Grammar School, had battled medical issues since birth but is described as a happy and loving girl, who always was concerned for the welfare of others. Gracelyn died at Lebonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis. "We knew there was something wrong and that she was ill before she was born, after they found things on the ultrasound," says her mother Emily Thompson. Gracelyn developed a serious liver disease and her mother says she had the opportunity for a transplant at the age of two, however she was not able to receive it. but earlier thsi month she received two transplants at the Memphis hospital, neither of which was successful. Ms. Thompson said she had hoped to donate Gracelyn's organs at the time of her death because she loved to help people. But because of her lengthy illness and multiple medical issues, her organs could not be used. "But I am a huge supporter of organ donation. It was something Gracelyn looked forward to her whole life. If someone is thinking about an organ donation, and thinks it doesn't matter; yes it definitely does matter," she says. "She was very excited about the call about a transplant because she knew it would lead to a normal life. She was looking forward to throwing her medicine away and being able to go outside, run and play." You can register as an organ doner by going to https://donatelifetn.org/, or by calling 877-552-5050. One donor can save eight lives.
