Newport Planning Commission Members of the Newport Planning Commission meeting Tuesday agreed to recommend to the Newport City Council that future development of properties on the Cosby Road and West Highway 25/70, include a sidewalk and grass strip. The grass strip will provide a barrier between the street and the sidewalk. In addition, it will allow easier access to underground water and sewer lines. City Planner Gary Carver will research the issue of the required width of the sidewalk and grass strip, before the regulation is presented to the Council for approval. He told the members that requiring a wide sidewalk for pedestrians and bicycles, "would add an attractive quality to the city, to draw more people to move in." A Certificate of Compliance for Goodwater Vineyards has been sent to state officials confirming that the winery has received approval for the use of a building at the corner of Hedrick Drive and West Broadway as a wine tasting and store at that location. The planners had previously given unanimous approval for the store, however it also must be licensed by the state. The letter provides validation that the city's C-2 General Business zoning "allows for display and sales of wine, and wine tasting." It would be the first wine tasting and store in the city. Scottie Hicks was given an extension on the time allowed to replace a mobile home on Blazer Street which recently burned. The home was formerly owned by Katrina Dorsey.
