Whitten charged
A Newport man was jailed Tuesday on charges of attempted second degree murder, elder abuse and aggravated domestic assault in connection with an incident earlier this month at his home. Terry M. Whitten, 59, Navaho Drive, lived with his mother, 79 year-old Zella Mae Whitten, and was responsible for caring for her. On may 17, Newport Patrol Officer Joshua Bigus responded to the residence after Pamela Watkins said she arrived at the residence to find her mother was injured. Mrs. Whitten said she had been beaten over the head with a cane, and initially lost consciousness. Her son had earlier told his mother "he was done caring for her, that they can come in the house and find your body," the officer said. The victim was in an incapacitated state due to failing health. After the assault of his mother, the defendant allegedly slashed his arms with a knife. Both subjects were sent by ambulance to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment, and the defendant was released on Tuesday. Bond is set at $500,000 and the subject is prohibited from going to the home or possessing a firearm, if he is released from jail.
