Memorial Day holiday travel
One million more travelers are expected for Memorial Day this year; creating the highest travel volume for the holiday since 2005. AAA projects 39.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home that weekend. The total number of Tennessee travelers is expected to top 785,000, an increase of almost two percent over last year. “The expected spike in Memorial Day travel mirrors the positive growth seen throughout the travel industry this year,” says Vicky Evans, of AAA . “So far in 2017, travel bookings in Tennessee are up almost 4 percent, compared to the same period last year. Higher confidence, rising wages, and recent gas price declines have bolstered consumer spending.” The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as today through Monday, May 29. An estimated 690,000 people are expected to travel by car in Tennessee over the holiday weekend. And motorists won’t be slowed down by road construction as they travel Tennessee’s highways this Memorial Day weekend. The Tennessee Department of Transportation will suspend all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state routes beginning at 12:00 noon on Friday, through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30.
