Newport Animal Shelter funding is closer
Newport city officials last week indicated that they would be willing to contribute $100,000 to the operation of the Newport Animal Shelter. Monday night, members of the Cocke County Legislative Body generally voiced a willingness to contribute a matching $100,000, if an agreement can be reached with the Friends of the Animal Shelter, a non-profit organization. An agreement will be necessary if the shelter is to remain open, after June 30, because the Friends group says it cannot operate the facility without such contributions from the governmental bodies. Newport Alderman Jeff Fancher has been spearheading the effort to keep the shelter open. He talked to the NewsSource on Tuesday about the tentative agreement on a funding resolution, saying he was happy to learn of the county's agreement in principle to increase it's funding from last year's $60,000 contribution. "The city of Newport has been committed to make this thing work but we want to make sure we have equal representation from the county. We aren't there yet but we are making progress." At a recent meeting, April Clevenger proposed that the government funding for the shelter be funneled through her non-profit, which was set up to operate Jolly Tots Learning Center, but which today is Tiny Tots Learning Center. Fancher says there are concerns with running the finances through a learning center non-profit. He said MTAS (Municipal Technical Advisory Service)has similar concerns with regard to funding under a learning center. "If that funding was toward the Friends of the Animal Shelter, I think we'd be more apt to go ahead and get this done."
