Senate health bill
Tennessee Democrats are criticizing the state's two Republican U.S. senators — Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker — for participating in what they call secret efforts to develop an Obamacare repeal bill that is to be released today. Democratic Party Chairwoman Mary Mancini says, "This is not the way government is supposed to work." Senate Democrats say they have been locked out of discussions and have complained to the panel's chairman, Senator Alexander, that no public hearings on the Republican bill have been held. Tennessee Democrats, say if the Senate version is anything like the House-passed American Health Care Act, hundreds of thousands of working Tennesseans who obtained health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, could face soaring premiums or no coverage at all. Advocates say the House bill's impact on Medicaid, which provides coverage to the poor, could hurt beneficiaries through spending caps establishing set amounts the federal government sends to states. That includes the elderly poor who are on both Medicare as well as Medicaid. State Republican Representative Jeremy Faison of Cosby also is concerned that without adequate payments, hospitals and other providers will have a hard time keeping their doors open. Alexander says he has been meeting regularly with Tennesseans about health care issues. He points out that the proposal will be evaluated by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, and then members of the Senate will be able to amend it on the Senate floor.
