Newport planners accept dance academy as educational The Newport Planning Commission meeting Tuesday, voted to recognize Newport Dance and Cheer Academy as an educational entity. Owners Aaron and Susan McMahan currently have two locations downtown, but want to combine the sites at one location at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Sixth Street. But the site is zoned R-2 which allows for residences and some other uses including schools. Ms. McMahan told the body she has a teaching degree and the services offered are educational, including martial arts, fitness, dance, gymnastics and cheerleading. "We have offerings for children and parents; toddlers up to adults for all ages. We have two teachers on site, so as far as qualifications, we have that in the area of education. And we are adding this fall, an after school program. It will offer homework help, tutoring and we will offer physical activity in fitness recreation and games, and arts and crafts." Mr. McMahan said neighbors in the area have no objection to their planned facility. The couple had planned a move to a site on Broadway, however flood insurance at that site made the plan cost prohibitive. The site is very small and so the McMahans plan to be back next month to ask the planners for a variance in required setbacks, to make the location feasible for the project. The body also approved a plan to combine three lots into one, between East Broadway and Main Street downtown. The site lies to the west of Wall Street, and includes the site of the former Parks Cleaners. The move to combine the three lots came at the request of the Kickliter family who own the parcels, and who reportedly plan to construct a building to house several family professionals.
