Planned road projects
The Tennessee Comptrollerís Office of Research and Education Accountability has released maps showing where road and bridge projects identified in the IMPROVE Act will take place across each state legislatorís district. The act raised taxes on gas and diesel fuel while lowering the tax on groceries, the Hall income tax and franchise and excise taxes. A total of 962 road and bridge projects were identified in the act, totaling 1,300 miles and an estimated cost of $10.5 billion. The Tennessee Department of Transportation estimates it will take about 14 years to get all the projects under contract. In the 11th. District which includes Cocke County and portions of Jefferson and Greene Counties, the map shows; -Complete the Newport Bypass from St. Tide Hollow Road on Highway 321, across the French Broad and Pigeon Rivers, to West Highway 25/70 at Thinwood Drive and west to I-40. -Continue the improvement of Highway 321 south to Sevier County and north to Greenneville. -continue the new Highway 411 in Jefferson County to the Sevier County line -Upgrade I-40 through Cocke and Jefferson Counties.
