Newport man is victim of hit and run
Virginia State Police are continuing to ask for the public’s assistance in identifying the driver of a tractor-trailer that struck and killed a Newport man along Interstate 81 just south of Raphine the morning of August 4. Virginia State Police Trooper J.T. Crewe is investigating the death of Donald J. Davis, 65, who died in what police are investigating as a hit and run collision. Crewe said that Davis probably was struck shortly before 1:45 a.m. The trooper who stopped to assist what looked like a broken-down 1993 Subaru, found Davis dead on the ground behind his car. Investigators determined that Davis was struck by a tractor-trailer, believed to be a silver, or a combination of silver and white Freightliner. The tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the roadway, struck the victim and continued north without stopping, near the 205 mile marker. Trooper Crewe said the Freightliner will have the plastic skirt or bumper missing, along with possible damage to the passenger side headlight. The Virginia State Police are asking that anyone traveling in that area from 12:30 to 1:45 am, and noticed the 1993 Subaru on the right shoulder of the roadway to call (800) 542-5959.
