McMahan charges are pending
Charges are pending against a Cocke County woman who Saturday night argued with her boyfriend while under the influence, and then allegedly shot herself. Cocke County Sgt. Max Laughter said he went to the home of Rodney Leon Hance and Teresa Ellen McMahan on Wind Spirit Way, Newport just after 11 pm, finding the couple under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Both agreed they were in a verbal altercation but that it was not physical. They agreed to stop arguing and to go to bed. But as officers returned to their cruisers, they heard a "low pop" in the home. Soon thereafter the 43 year-old McMahan came onto the porch, covered in blood and saying "he shot me". Hance declined to follow instructions and was tasered by the officers. He told officers he was seated where he had been earlier when Ms. McMahan shot herself. Sgt. Laughter said a subsequent investigation revealed that a small .22 single shot handgun was lying near where the injured woman had been seated, and several bullets were lying nearby. "The way the bullet had grazed McMahan's forehead, and the angle from which it was fired and entered the wall, showed evidence that the gunshot was self-inflicted," the officer said. First CallEMS took the injured woman to the Newport Medical Center and she later was flown to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. Warrants have been issued charging McMahan with domestic assault, false report and attempted suicide.
