Cocke County officer involved shooting fatality
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says it is investigating a Cocke County deputy involved fatal shooting Sunday evening. The investigation was begun at the request of Fourth Judicial District Attorney General James Dunn. According to TBI spokesperson Leslie Earhart, preliminary information indicates that a deputy with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 600 block of Middle Creek Road in Cosby after receiving information that a male subject, known to have outstanding warrants, was walking along the road. Upon seeing the deputy, the male subject fled into a wooded area. The deputy pursued him on foot. At some point during the foot pursuit, the male subject reportedly confronted the deputy with a weapon which resulted in the deputy firing shots, striking the man. He was transported to the Newport Medical Center where he later died. The TBI currently has a team of Agents and Forensic Scientists working to gather all relevant details. "As in any case, the investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review," she said. And adds Earhart, “as is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.” Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes has not identified the officer involved, but did issue a statement saying the Cocke County Sheriffs Office is investigating an officer involved shooting which occurred at approximately 7:19 pm, and he has contacted the TBI to assist in the investigation. According to the sheriff, the officer involved in the incident was not injured however the identity of the suspect can not be released at this time. He says the shooting incident occurred when the officer was attempting to take the suspect into custody on criminal warrants. Sheriff Fontes says further details on the incident and ongoing investigation will be released at a later time. But the sheriff added,“This is a reminder of the dangers officers face working to protect this community. Please keep all parties involved in your thoughts and prayers."
