Hurricane insurance losses Last year insurance companies told the NewsSource that the wildfires in the Smokies would not lead to insurance premium increases because of a catastrophic fund which had earlier been established. But now we are being told, even though we were not hit by hurricanes Harvey or Irma, East Tennessee residents may see an insurance premium increase. The estimated U.S. insured losses, excluding any National Flood Insurance Program claims, are $20 billion to $25 billion from Harvey and $40 billion to $60 billion from Irma. Experts say insurers are looking to stay profitable as they cover their re-insurance policies.
