Tobacco conspiracy
Two Cocke County women are charged in a conspiracy to smuggle tobacco into the Cocke County Jail. Cocke County Sgt David Moriarty said he learned that a plan had been developed to get tobacco into Cell 6. Just before 11 pm on Saturday, he observed Donyelle Rathbone, 25, Hill Road, Newport, outside of the jail putting tobacco and a lighter into a sock which was attached to a string. It then was pulled up to a window in the third-floor jail where it was retrieved by inmate Courtney Freeman, 28, Spar Road, Hartford. But also on hand, observing the incident was Corrections Officer Katie Spann, who confiscated the tobacco. A search of Rathbone following a traffic stop, revealed syringes and prescribed Ibuprofen. Freeman is charged with Conspiracy to Introduce Contraband into the Jail, and Rathbone is charged with Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution, Possession of a Legend Drug and Drug Paraphernalia, as well as Driving on a Revoked License.
