Cocke County couple injured in home fire
A Cocke County couple was injured in an early morning Tuesday fire in their home. Cocke County Firefighter Cody Strom said firefighters with the Cosby Volunteer Fire Department were the first on the scene of the 6 am blaze in the residence of John and Marie Russell on Dairy Road. They later were joined by the Cocke County Fire Department. Cocke County Deputy Sgt. Hollis Emmons said he found the couple had sustained burns. Mr. Russell had injuries to his arms and face, and his wife had burns to her hands and feet. First Call EMS reportedly took the couple to the Newport Medical Center for treatment. Although the couple reported they had extinguished the fire with a water hose before firefighters arrived on the scene, firemen entered the home to confirm that the blaze had been extinguished, and then used ventilation fans to clear smoke from the residence. Sgt. Emmons said he understood that Mrs. Russell had fallen asleep while smoking in bed, waking to find the bed on fire. The bed was burned, a window air conditioner was damaged, and the bedroom sustained heavy smoke damage. However Firefighter Strom said the damage was confined to the bedroom.
