250K Tree Day
The Tennessee Environmental Council and its State Agency partners have announced their plan to plant 250,000 native seedlings across Tennessee on February 24. Known as “250K Tree Day,” the event promises free seedlings to Tennessee residents who register before February 1 while supplies of seedlings last. The group also is encouraging donations during registration to cover the cost of the program. The group’s goal is to plant 250,000 seedlings in one day across all 95 Tennessee counties. Residents can register for their seedlings at www.tectn.org. The group says this is the largest community tree-planting event in the United States, and the largest in the history of Tennessee. Seedlings may be reserved in bundles of 5 at www.tectn.org. Each bundle of five seedlings includes one each of Northern Red Oak, Tulip Poplar, Red Bud, Pine, and a fifth hardwood species that varies depending upon where the participant lives. You can register for your free trees online or call the Cocke County UT Extension Office at 423-623-7531 to register. Trees will be distributed on February 23 by Keep Cocke County Beautiful, in the Lowes parking lot on Crowe Lane in Newport. The trees are to be planted on February 24.
