Senator Alexander on budget infrastructure plans United States Senator Lamar Alexander , Republican of Tennessee has issued comments regarding the proposed infrastructure budget of President Donald Trump. The plan calls for local and state governments to pay 80 percent of infrastructure costs and the federal budget to provide $25 billion for a wall on the southern border. “The president may suggest a budget, but, under the Constitution, Congress sets spending priorities and passes appropriations bills. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I will carefully consider the president’s recommendations, but my priorities will continue to be making sure our national defense, national laboratories, the National Institutes of Health and national parks have the resources they need,” said Alexander. Senator Alexander and other lawmakers have proposed to help address the National Park Service maintenance backlog in President Trump’s infrastructure plan and the Department of the Interior’s Fiscal Year 2019 budget request: “We agree that we have a responsibility to address the growing maintenance backlog in our national parks – which includes roads, buildings, campgrounds, trails, water systems and more. This is an issue Congress has been focused on for many years. We will introduce bipartisan legislation in the House of Representatives and the Senate in the coming weeks to help restore and rebuild our national parks for the next generation of visitors.”
