Improving beef herds
The University of Tennessee Extension Service in Cocke County will host the Improving Profitability through Reproduction short course for East Tennessee beef producers. The course will be offered on April 5th & 6th in Newport. It will include the basics of cattle reproduction, beef cattle nutrition and health, reproductive technologies available to farmers, and the economics associated with utilizing these practices. Most notably the course will incorporate hands-on learning opportunities for learning artificial insemination techniques and pregnancy determination in both the classroom setting and in live cattle. Speakers for the course will include a variety of extension agents from local counties and representatives from Southeast Select Sires and other agricultural companies and organizations. The short course will be held at the First United Methodist Church Nurture Center located at 212 Washington Avenue and at Wilson Livestock Market in Newport. It will be offered from 9 am until 5 pm both days, and lunch will be provided each day. Class participation fee is $75 and will cover lunch and all class materials. Registration materials can be found online at cocke.tennessee.edu or be picked up at the Extension Office in Newport. Deadline for registration is March 30th.
