Early voting coming up
Voters in the Lakeway region are reminded that the deadline to register before the May County Primary is April 2. Individuals may register in-person at the Election Commission office in their county, Register online at GoVoteTN.com or register by mail. Should call their local office to request a voter registration application, or download a paper application on the website. If registering to vote by-mail, the application must be postmarked by April 2. Voter registration does not automatically transfer from county to county or state to state. If an individual has moved back to the area after living in another county or state for a while, the individual should make sure he/she is registered to vote locally by the deadline of April 2. If an individual has not voted in a number of years, the voter registration may have been purged in accordance with prior state law. Call or visit the Election Commission office to make sure you are still registered. Once the voter is registered, he/she will receive a card/letter in the mail from the Election Commission office as proof the registration was processed. However, a voter does not need to bring the voter registration card or letter when voting on Election Day or during Early Voting. Voters must, however, bring a photo ID issued by the Tennessee or federal government when voting in person. Examples are a Tennessee Driver License with name and photo, a Passport, or VA Card with photo. For more information on the Photo ID law, call the Election Commission office Because this election is a County Primary, voters must choose Republican Primary or Democratic Primary when appearing to vote. Tennessee is an open primary state; voters do not register by party, but if voting in a primary, the voter must identify which ballot he/she wants when voting. Early voting is April 11 – April 26. Registered voters may update their addresses before or during Early Voting. All address changes are strongly encouraged before, during, or by the end of Early Voting. If a voter waits until Election Day to change his/her address, the voter will have to fill-out additional paperwork and may have to travel to a different precinct. Voters may call or visit the office for more information or update their addresses online by completing an updated Voter Registration Application. Many voters may be eligible to vote Absentee By-Mail. For example, any person age 60 or older who has voted at least once in-person may vote by-mail. To request an Absentee By-Mail ballot, call the election commission office or download a request form online. The last day to request an absentee by-mail ballot is April 24. Persons with a felony conviction may be eligible to have their voting rights restored. Check with the Election Commission office for more information. Voting Rights Restoration paperwork should be completed as soon as possible so, if approved, the individual could have time to register to vote by the deadline.
