Proposed opioid crackdown Gov. Bill Haslam and health providers who had been at odds over a proposed crackdown on opioid painkiller prescriptions reportedly have resolved their conflict.. Haslam's proposal would put more limits on short-term prescriptions of opioids. The state with an opioid crisis saw more than 1,600 residents die from drug overdoses in 2016. Haslam wants to curb new cases of narcotic painkiller addiction arising from prescriptions in areas ranging from surgeries to major dental work and broken bones. In addition medical marijuana legalization to address the problem, is on the table in the General Assembly But doctors, dentists and pharmacists say originally proposed prescription limits were too restrictive, interfered with the physician-patient relationship and added paperwork for their offices. The dispute resulted in behind-the-scenes meetings involving administration officials and representatives of doctors, dentists and pharmacists to find a compromise.
