District vs. state opioid lawsuit
Fourth Judicial District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn has joined with other jurisdictions in a lawsuit against opioid producers. State Attorney General Herbert Slatery III says the lawsuit by 14 district attorneys general naming the pharmaceutical firms, violates the authority of his office, which is working with other states to reach a settlement with the companies. Slatery argues there are several grounds on which only the state Attorney General should bring suit against the pharmaceutical firms. He argues that the district attorneys general lawsuit is complicating his efforts. Earlier this week all 14 District DA's signed a letter that accuses Slatery of attempting to block their efforts to force opioid manufacturers to answer under the Drug Dealer Liability Act. "We find it troubling that you are taking a position adverse to our goals in this litigation. As we have stated to you many, many times before, we were hopeful that you would be an asset in our fight against the drug producers who drown our communities in illegal opioids," the letter says. Slatery argues that DA's are not allowed to hire outside counsel without his permission, which they do not have.
