Charlotte Nan Mims obituary
A longtime member and former Chair of the Newport Board of Education has died. Charlotte Nan Jones Mims, 85, of Newport, died Sunday morning following a period of declining health. She was born in Newport on December 23, 1932, the only child of J. Fred and Elizabeth (Stokely) Jones. After completing her elementary education at Newport Grammar School and graduating from Cocke County High School in 1950, she entered Sullins College. She later transferred to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She also earned her Masters of Counseling degree. She also continued her teaching career, first at the old Cocke County High School on College Street, where she initially taught English. Later she taught Health and Physical Education, continuing to do so after the present high school building was completed in the mid-1960s. She ended her career as a high school counselor. She also served on the boards of the Newport Housing Authority, the Tennessee Children’s Dance Ensemble, and the Cocke County Senior Advisory Committee, was a founding member and former president of the Newport Theatre Guild, an active member and past regent of the William Cocke Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a member of the Cocke County Retired Teachers. Mims will be remember for her exuberant approach to life, her dedication to her family, and her strong desire and positive actions to help her community grow and become better. She was preceded in death by her parents J. Fred and Elizabeth (Stokely) Jones, husband William E. ‘Bud’ Mims, son Freddy Mims, and daughter and son-in-law Lisa (Mims) and Scott Cope. Her immediate survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Shari (Mims) and David Perryman of Newport, grandchildren Elizabeth Jewel ‘Lia’ Perryman of Knoxville, William David ‘Bud’ Perryman of North Hollywood, California, Alayna Mims Perryman of Newport, and Heather (Mims) York and husband James of Madisonville, TN; daughter-in-law Theresa (Buckner) Mims of Dandridge, numerous cousins, and countless friends. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 18, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with a Celebration of Life service led by Dr. James Bennington at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be Thursday, April 19, 2018, in Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be sent to Empower Cocke County, P.O. Box 415, Newport, TN 37822, or to the Cocke County High School Auditorium Fund, 216 Hedrick Drive, Newport, TN 37821. Arrangements by Manes Funeral Home
