Holt arrest
A Newport woman faces charges following a Monday afternoon incident involving gunfire near the Newport Grammar School. School Resource Officer Sgt. Justin Vinson said he received reports that a woman was firing a handgun on Eighth Street, and was walking toward the school at 3 pm. The officer located Carolyn Woods Holt, 73, Eighth Street, who was found to be holding a .38 handgun under her sweatshirt. Holt eventually dropped the weapon onto the ground as she was held at gunpoint by Patrol Officer Jonathan Ball. The weapon contained three spent bullets and three live bullets. Holt admitted she had fired the weapon at her husband, 75 year-old Randall Holt and she told the officers "she wanted the police to shoot and kill her," according to Sgt. Vinson. Officers also said Mrs. Holt said she had fired into the air to scare her husband. The incident occurred 450 feet from the school. Mrs. Holt was jailed on Aggravated Assault charges.
