Work starts today on new piping
Since early April, Newport Utilities has been preparing for the project which will replace the water and wastewater piping along East Broadway in downtown Newport. Engineer Clint Hammonds says excavation will begin today on Woodlawn Avenue. And so Woodlawn will be closed from Main Street to Broadway until that section is completed, likely around Wednesday, April 25th. After the Woodlawn section is complete, workmen will begin working on Broadway, resulting in a closure of Broadway between Woodlawn Ave and Jefferson Ave. The plan is to close Broadway one section at a time until all work is completed on each section. So, one block of Woodlawn will be closed starting today and then Broadway will be closed one section at a time starting likely next Wednesday. And then, Broadway shutdowns will continue until the project is completed. Parking for businesses may be confined to side streets or alternate parking, but access to businesses will remain. Through traffic on Broadway is advised to use an alternate route. Hammonds expressed his appreciation for the patience of the community, "as we provide a much-improved service downtown."
