Jones arrest
A Newport man who with his father allegedly was caught in a Cocke County home when the homeowner came home unexpectedly, was taken into custody on Wednesday. Newport Patrol Officer Brandon Cassidy said he responded to a complaint that there was an unwanted visitor at a residence on River Street, finding Matthew Allen Jones, 22, Vinson Drive, Newport at the home. Jones and his father, Keith Jones allegedly entered the Dawn Sutton home on Highway 411, and were confronted inside the residence when Sutton came home on April 12. Although the elder Jones was prevented from leaving and was arrested, Matthew Jones fled on foot. He is charged with Aggravated Burglary, Criminal Conspiracy, Trespassing by Motor Vehicle and Possession of Burglary Tools. In addition, the suspect is charged with Theft over $1,000 in a November 2017 incident in which he stole a $3,790 ring owned by Geneva Strom. He allegedly sold the ring to Newport Jewelers for $250. Bond for Matthew Jones is set at $20,000.
