Newport residents survive heroin overdose
Two Newport residents who overdosed on heroin Friday morning survived. Newport Patrol Officer Brandon Cassidy said he responded to a call to a residence on Old Cave Church Road where he found two subjects, Destyni Boykin, 26, and John Barrett, 34, unconscious in the living room. Boykin of Tranquility Way, Newport, remained unconscious and her entire body had turned blue, according to Officer Cassidy. CPR was begun but the woman stopped breathing. So officers administered Narcan in the nostril of Boykin, and over the next several minutes, the woman regained consciousness. She was able to walk from the home. Barrett remained unconscious but continued to breathe so First Call EMS transported him to the Newport Medical Center for treatment. A resident of the home told police that Boykin and Barrett had shot up heroin about 30 minutes before they lost consciousness.
