Farm Bill defeated
The US House on Friday defeated the proposed Farm Bill. One of the main obstacles was a provision that would have cut the SNAP program by $17 billion, a savings partly needed to cover the cost of the tax cuts passed by Congress last year. Passage of the bill would have removed an estimated 1.2 million food stamp recipients. US Congressman Phil Roe, Republican of the First District, said he was disappointed in the defeat of the legislation. "I’ll never apologize for taking care of our farmers. Over the last five years, net farming income has declined by 52 percent because of causes like natural disasters and changes in the global economy. In meeting with agricultural stakeholders throughout our district, I have heard about the difficulties facing our farmers. While I believe the bill could have been strengthened by encouraging healthy food options in the SNAP program, the bill adopts some very reasonable requirements for work or education in the SNAP program so that beneficiaries are offered a hand up through this program, not simply a handout," said Roe.
