Qualifying is underway for Newport and Parrottsville posts The candidate qualifying period for the City of Newport and Parrottsville Municipal Elections is now underway. Cocke County Election Administrator Josh Blanchard says nominating petitions are now available in the Election Commission office for: Newport Mayor (4-year term); All five (5) At-large Newport Alderman positions (4-year terms); Two (2) At-large Newport School Board seats (4-year terms); One (1) At-large Newport School Board seat for the (2-year unexpired term of Charlotte Nan Mims); All three (3) At-large Parrottsville City Commissioner positions (4-year terms). The Parrottsville Mayor will be chosen by, and from among, the Parrottsville city commissioners following the election. Friday was the first day of the candidate qualifying period for the city elections, and the candidate qualifying deadline is Thursday, August 16 at 12 Noon in the Election Commission office. Those who picked up petitions on Friday are; Jeff Fancher for Newport Mayor and Dewayne “Doodle” Daniel for Parrottsville City Commissioner At Large. The Newport and Parrottsville city elections will be held on Tuesday, November 6, along with the State and Federal Mid-Term General Election. The voter registration deadline for the November election is Tuesday, October 9.
