Newport Planning Commission
The Newport Board of Zoning Appeals and Regional Planning Commission, meeting Tuesday approved two site plns. Members approved a set back variance for the new Commercial Bank site on the Cosby Road at Sequoyah Drive. Architect Jake Greear of McGill and Associates said plans are too put a modular structure behind the current bank and then demolish the current building to provide additional parking. Greear told the NewsSource that plans are to bring the new structure to the site within several weeks and have the current structure demolished by this Fall. The members also approved plans by Appalachian Veterinarian Hospital to add an addition to the rear of the current site and also expand parking at the rear of the facility, on West Broadway. The body also agreed to recommend to the City Council, that the current political sign ordinance be updated. City Manager James Finchum detailed the recommended proposal which includes; signs may be posted no more than 90 days before the election, are limited to four square feet in residential and 16 square feet in commercial districts, must be at least seven feet from the street, may not obstruct vision and may not be placed near a traffic light pole. Signs are prohibited on city property and city employees have the authority to remove signs that are in violation of the ordinance. It frequently is difficult to obtain a quorum of the nine members on the Commission, and State Planner Dan Hawk suggested it likely would be easier to obtain a quorum if the number of members was reduced. so the City Council will be asked to reduce the membership to seven. If the recommendation is approved, the reduction will be accomplished through attrition. City Planner Gary Carver reported that Newport has been chosen for the Tennessee Downtowns program. He said plans are to develop a downtown historical district, likely to include the historic Mims Hotel.
